Feelin’ Like Film Distribution Reality Bites? Bite [Me] back! Four ‘A’ Takeaways from the NYWIFT Bite Me Panel
06.10.2019 — Mellini Kantayya, NYWIFT
The team behind the independent feature Bite Me recently joined NYWIFT for a panel case study on how they flipped the film distribution paradigm from something you “get” into something you “do.” Bite Me is a romantic comedy about a woman who believes she’s a real-life vampire and the IRS agent who audits her. The team felt they had a unique and edgy while still relatable and heartfelt film, but it wasn’t quite fitting into the current festival and distribution landscape. So, they forged their own path ahead.
Celebrating the Spirit of NYC Artists at the Greenwich Village Film Festival
11.05.2018 — Stephanie Cole, NYWIFT
It’s 30 minutes before the start of Opening Night at the Greenwich Village Film Festival, and Alessia Gatti, President and Co-Founder of the festival, looks about as unruffled as you can get. I’ve been introduced to her and her business partner (and co-founder), Antonio Padovan, by New York Women in Film & Television (NYWIFT) Board member Terry Greenberg, who also happens to be on the jury for the festival. As we chat for a few minutes, I can’t help but notice that both Alessia and Antonio are nothing but easy smiles and relaxed stances. I’m more than a little impressed considering it’s not just opening night, but the festival itself has made quite the big leap this year.

09.16.2016 — Great Neck Record Staff
An opening reception for Interiors will be held at the Gold Coast Arts Center (GCAC) on Sunday, Sept. 18, from 4 to 7 p.m. at 115 Middle Neck Rd. The new exhibition, which runs until Nov. 20, will include photography, painting and sculpture from artists Maxi Cohen, Orestes Gonzalez and Laini Nemett.
Interiors explores the artists’ relationships with familiar places and how they connect to interior landscapes of personal history, memory and association. Photographer/videographer Maxi Cohen captures moments in the ladies room “as a space of sanctuary and solitude.” Painter Laini Nemett wants the composite imagery to “conjure memory” and emulate an experience of place. Orestes Gonzalez’s photographs capture moments of loneliness, happiness and a time of innocence.
Female TV Veterans Get Real About Creating Comedy and Not Waiting to Be Asked
11.13.2015 — Sonya Saepoff, IndieWire
This year’s New York Comedy Festival was kicked off with riotous laughter by the New York Women in Film and Television Panel “Comedy Makers: Tales from the Dark Side.” Moderated by comedian Lizz Winstead, the panel included writer Susan Fales-Hill, producer Barbara Gaines, writer and actress Jill Kopelman Kargman, director and executive producer Stephanie Laing, and writer and executive producer Elisa Zuritsky.
These hilarious women shared the ups and downs in their careers, including some horror stories from the male-dominated writers’ rooms.
Dinner-Party Queen Jill Kargman Will Bring Up Her Birth Control, Thank You
11.12.2015 — Samuel Anderson, The Cut
With three kids and a hit TV show, Odd Mom Out star Jill Kargman effortlessly embodies the cool-mom ideal, but on Tuesday at an all-female panel for the New York Comedy Festival, she retained her right to make birth-control jokes at dinner parties:
“I was talking about my IUD and how my bedsheet is the flag of Japan every month. And I’m dying and I hate it. And this woman [said she] had her tubes tied after having her fifth baby, and I said I would have taken the ‘We heart our customers’ thing off the dry-cleaning hanger and just, like, twist. And this guy goes, ‘TMI, TMI, that’s disgusting.’ And I’m like, we hear about your dicks all day long. Why do I have 20 synonyms [for male masturbation]? Like, spanking the monkey, choking the chicken, punishing the bitch in the turtleneck. And God forbid I talk about my [uterus] for one minute. It’s not about being irreverent. It’s leveling the playing field.”
These Women Are Labias to the Wall Funny
11.07.2014 — Emily Shire, Daily Beast
Despite the fact that Lucille Ball, Gilda Radner, Joan Rivers, Tracey Ullman, Whoopi Goldberg, Sarah Silverman, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and a boatload of other people with two X chromosomes have been making us laugh for decades, it is still considered valid to argue that women aren’t funny. “Why are women, who have the whole male world at their mercy, not funny? Please do not pretend not to know what I am talking about,” pondered the late, revered intellectual Christopher Hitchens in revered publication Vanity Fair not so long ago in 2007.
Fittingly, at Caroline’s on Broadway—a legendary New York comedy venue run by Caroline Hirsch—a group of hilarious women gathered Thursday night to prove to people like Hitchens, Patrice O’Neal, Artie Lange and unfortunately many others that having a vagina doesn’t render you humorless. In addition to Carolines on Broadway, the panel was organized by NYWIFT and the New York Comedy Festival. Lea DeLaria (better known as Big Boo to OITNB fans), Louie executive producer Blair Breard, Emmy-award winning Judy Gold, and Chappelle Show veteran comedian Marina Franklin all spoke at “Women Aren’t Funny: Debunking the Myth” in a panel hosted by stand-up comedian Bonnie McFarlane, who recently made a documentary of the same name.
‘Too Long; Didn’t Listen’ Ep. 6: ‘Women Aren’t Funny’ With Bonnie McFarlane And Marina Franklin
11.05.2014 — Katla McGlynn, HuffPost
In a special sixth edition of “TL;DL,” Katla McGlynn sat down with the very funny Bonnie McFarlane and Marina Franklin ahead of their New York Comedy Festival panel entitled, “Women Aren’t Funny: Debunking The Myth” on Nov. 6 at Caroline’s.
Instead of our usual segments, comedians Bonnie and Marina offered their thoughts on the viral catcalling video and the comedy community’s various responses to it, then moved on to discuss the unfortunate misconception that women aren’t as funny as men.
